Eating plans / Wegovy pill

Wegovy pill eating plan

A plain tablet on a saucer, a small glass of water and a kitchen timer, with a bowl of yogurt in the background

Short version

The Wegovy pill is semaglutide you take every morning on an empty stomach with no more than 4 oz of water, then nothing else to eat or drink for 30 minutes. Taken any other way it is poorly absorbed. The daily dose gives a flatter side effect curve than the pen: no peak days, but no easy days either in the first weeks. Breakfast is the meal to plan.

How the pill behaves in your body

Oral semaglutide is absorbed in the stomach and only when the stomach is empty. That is why the label is strict: first thing in the morning, with a small sip of water, then 30 minutes without food, drink or other medication. After that your day is normal.

Because you dose daily, the level in your blood is steady rather than peaking after a shot. Side effects, when they come, show up as a steady background in the first weeks of each dose rather than two bad days. Doses step up roughly every four weeks through several levels to your maintenance dose; your clinician sets the pace.

Your morning, every day

On wakingPill with up to 4 oz of plain water. Nothing else.
30 minutesShower, dress, walk the dog. Set a timer the first weeks; the wait is where most mistakes happen.
BreakfastProtein first, small: Greek yogurt with berries, two eggs, cottage cheese. This meal matters most, because it is the one your dose and your morning queasiness meet.
Rest of the dayThree small meals plus a protein snack, fluids between meals, stop at first fullness.

The daily rules

Protein first, 25 to 30 grams per meal. Breakfast counts double: it sets up the day.

Three small meals plus one or two protein snacks. Daily dosing means every day matters; there are no catch up days.

64 to 80 oz of fluid after the 30 minute window, sipped through the day.

Low fat in the first two weeks of each dose. That is when the background queasiness is strongest.

Two strength sessions a week, any days you like; there are no peak days to work around.

Common questions

What if I forget and eat first?

Skip that day's dose and take the next one the following morning as usual. Do not take it later in the day after food; it will not be absorbed properly. Check the Medication Guide that comes with your prescription for the exact instruction.

Can I take it with coffee?

No. Plain water only, no more than 4 oz, then wait 30 minutes. Coffee, tea and juice reduce absorption.

Why does the pill have a starting dose that does not cause weight loss?

The lowest dose is there to get your body used to the medication before stepping up. Side effects are lower and the weight effect comes with the higher doses.

Is the pill gentler than the pen?

Different rather than gentler. Daily dosing spreads the effect evenly, so you avoid the rough days after a shot, but the first weeks can feel queasy every morning. Eating a small protein breakfast right after the 30 minutes helps most people.

When to call your clinician

Vomiting for more than 24 hours, or not being able to keep fluids down

Severe or persistent abdominal pain, with or without vomiting, which can signal pancreatitis

Signs of dehydration: dizziness, very dark urine, not urinating

Side effects that do not ease at all after four weeks on the same dose. A slower step up is a normal thing to ask for.
