Eating plans / Zepbound and Mounjaro

Zepbound and Mounjaro eating plan

Grilled chicken strips, halved boiled eggs and tofu cubes on a wooden board with a small clock

Short version

Zepbound and Mounjaro are the same medication, tirzepatide, in a weekly pen. It acts on two gut hormones instead of one, so for many people appetite drops harder and faster than on semaglutide. That makes protein by the clock, not by hunger, the single most important habit: without it a large share of the weight you lose is muscle.

How the pen behaves in your body

Tirzepatide is injected once a week. The level peaks one to three days after the shot and falls toward the next one, so side effects cluster in the days after the injection and ease toward the end of the week. Because it works on two gut hormones, GLP-1 and GIP, the appetite effect is often stronger than on semaglutide and the first weeks can feel flatter: not nauseous, just no interest in food.

Doses step up roughly every four weeks through several levels to your maintenance dose. Each step restarts the rough week or two. Your clinician sets the pace.

Your injection week

Shot dayEat normally. A protein rich meal before the injection.
Days 1 to 3Peak days. Small portions, protein first, nothing fried or creamy. Set meal alarms if hunger is gone; eat anyway.
Days 4 to 5Appetite returns a little. Add vegetables and fiber back. First strength session.
Days 6 to 7Your most normal days. Bigger meal, second strength session, cook ahead for the next peak days.

The daily rules, with the tirzepatide twist

Protein by the clock. Three protein portions a day at set times, roughly 25 to 30 grams each, whether you feel like it or not. This is the rule that protects muscle.

Easy protein for no appetite days: a cold shake, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, two eggs, a few slices of chicken. Small, dense, done in five minutes.

64 to 80 oz of fluid, sipped between meals. Low appetite also means low thirst.

Low fat on peak days. Fat slows the stomach further and brings on nausea and reflux.

Two strength sessions a week, on days 4 to 7. Muscle you keep is weight that stays off when the dose comes down.

Common questions

Is the eating plan different for Mounjaro and Zepbound?

No. Both pens contain tirzepatide and are injected weekly, so the peak days and the food rules are the same. Zepbound is approved for weight management, Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes.

Why do I lose muscle faster on tirzepatide?

Not faster as such, but the appetite drop is stronger, so people eat less protein without noticing. Weight loss on tirzepatide is larger on average, and the muscle share tracks protein intake and strength training, not the drug.

I am never hungry. Do I have to eat?

Yes, by the clock. Three small protein portions a day is the floor. A shake, Greek yogurt or two eggs count. Skipping meals is the fastest route to fatigue, hair thinning and a stall later.

Can I switch from Zepbound to a pill?

Lilly's daily pill, Foundayo, uses a different molecule and has its own dose ladder. Switching is a clinician decision, not a swap. Our Foundayo plan explains how the daily rhythm differs.

When to call your clinician

Vomiting for more than 24 hours, or not being able to keep fluids down

Severe or persistent abdominal pain, with or without vomiting, which can signal pancreatitis

Signs of dehydration: dizziness, very dark urine, not urinating

Side effects that do not ease at all after four weeks on the same dose. A slower step up is a normal thing to ask for.
