Short version
Nausea on a GLP-1 is mostly about volume and fat, not about specific foods. Eat half portions, put protein first, cut fried and creamy food for a few days, and sip fluids between meals instead of with them. For most people it eases within four to eight weeks of each dose change.
Why it happens
GLP-1 medications slow down how fast your stomach empties. That is part of how they work: you feel full sooner and for longer. The flip side is that a normal sized meal now sits in your stomach for hours. Add fat, which slows emptying further, and a large or rich meal turns into queasiness, bloating or reflux.
It is worst when the medication level in your blood is highest: one to three days after a weekly injection, and for one to two weeks after every dose increase. Daily pills give a flatter curve, so the pattern is steadier but can be present every day at first.
What usually helps
Half portions, twice as often. Three small meals and one or two protein snacks beat two normal meals. Stop at the first sign of fullness, not when the plate is empty.
Protein first. Eat the protein on your plate before anything else. If you only manage a few bites, make them count.
Low fat for a few days. Grilled, baked, steamed or poached. No frying, no cream sauces, no cheese heavy dishes in the two to three days after your shot.
Cold or room temperature. Hot food smells more. Yogurt, cottage cheese, a cold chicken salad and smoothies often sit better than a hot plate.
Fluids between meals. Sip through the day. Drinking a big glass with food fills the stomach further. Ginger or peppermint tea help some people.
Stay upright. No lying down for two to three hours after eating. Eat your last meal early.
Skip alcohol and carbonated drinks while it is bad. Both make it worse for most people.

A sample day
| Morning | Greek yogurt with a few berries. Tea. If on the Wegovy pill: pill first, 30 minutes, then this. |
| Mid morning | Half a protein shake, cold, sipped slowly. |
| Lunch | Small bowl of chicken and rice soup, or two eggs with toast. |
| Afternoon | Cottage cheese or a banana. Water or ginger tea between meals. |
| Early dinner | Palm sized piece of baked fish, a few spoonfuls of rice, steamed carrots. Stop at first fullness. |
Roughly 70 to 90 grams of protein across the day, in portions small enough to keep down. Scale up as the week gets easier.
When to call your clinician
Vomiting for more than 24 hours, or not being able to keep fluids down
Severe or persistent abdominal pain, with or without vomiting, which can signal pancreatitis
Signs of dehydration: dizziness, very dark urine, not urinating
Nausea that does not ease at all after four weeks on the same dose. A slower dose schedule is a normal thing to ask for.
Common questions
Does the nausea go away?
For most people, yes. It is strongest in the first weeks and after each dose increase, and settles within four to eight weeks at a stable dose. If it does not ease at all after four weeks on the same dose, ask your clinician about a slower schedule.
Why am I still nauseous a week after my shot?
Weekly injections build up over the first weeks, so the trough between shots gets higher. A meal that was fine in week one can sit badly in week four. Go back to half portions and low fat for a few days.
Should I eat before my injection?
A normal, protein rich meal on shot day is fine and most people do better with it than on an empty stomach. The lighter eating starts the next day, when the medication level rises.
Is it different on the pill?
Daily pills give a flatter curve: no peak days, but no easy days either at first. The Wegovy pill also has to be taken on an empty stomach with a small sip of water, 30 minutes before food, which makes breakfast the meal to plan.
Can I take something for it?
That is a question for the clinician who prescribes your GLP-1. Some anti nausea medications are used alongside these drugs, but it depends on your history. Food changes are the first thing to try because they have no side effects of their own.
